The 66 Gilead Distillery has made shōchū, which pleases me, as I’m a fan of it, but it’s rarely available at the LCBO; only around Christmas time, in bigger centres like the GTA, not around here.
This shōchū is made with barley, rice, and sesame; it’s slightly sweet, smooth, and aromatic, much like sake but stronger, and with a slightly nutty flavour that sake doesn’t have. Easy sipping. Shōchū is milder than typical spirits, but at 25%, given how smooth it goes down, one should be careful; it’s easy to drink too much of it and not realize it. 🙂
