Slainte indeed

This bottle and 263,999 others like it were on board the SS Politician when it was wrecked off the island of Eriksay in 1941. People from across the Hebrides came to salvage what they could of the ship’s cargo. But then a local customs officer forced the police to start chasing down the bottles as no duty had been paid on them. Many locals wound up in court – the dock that many stood in is a few metres from this bottle in the museum in Lochmaddy, North Uist. Ultimately, the customs officer was given permission to attempt to destroy the remaining bottles to remove temptation. One local was recorded as saying: "Dynamiting whisky. You wouldn’t think there’d be men in the world so crazy as that."
