I was very taken by the cocktail menu at Rubirosa; four of the ten cocktails listed contained an Italian amaro of some kind, which gladdened my heart and made my mouth water. I was so taken, in fact, that I took a picture of the menu and forgot to take a picture of the ruttin’ drink when it arrived.
This quick-and-dirty Instagram snap of one we made at home will have to do, along with the recipe so you can try it yourself:
BLACK MANHATTAN
2 ounces rye whiskey (Rittenhouse 100-proof recommended)
1 ounce Amaro Averna
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash orange bitters (Miracle Mile or Regans’ recommended)
Stir with ice for 20-30 seconds and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a brandied or Luxardo cherry on a pick.
