Because about the only thing that could compete with giant colourful Chinese dragon lanterns as a backdrop is shelves stocked full of fine bourbon and whiskey.
After a stroll through Albert Park, we dropped by one of my new favourite places in central Auckland — Sam Snead’s House of Whiskey, where Snead offered Sal a glass of Jameson 12 Year Special Reserve Irish Whiskey to taste (I was the working photographer, so no drinking for me . . . da**it!).
Of course, we walked out with a bottle tucked under Sal’s arm. In with some cash in pocket, out with a bottle in a bag. It’s a curse, I tell you!
