Port Ellen Maltings
Port Ellen distillery was founded in the 1820s, expanded in the 1960s but then closed in 1984. Adjoining the distillery is the modern maltings which first started producing malt in 1974 for Caol Ila, Lagavulin, and Port Ellen.
Today, the maltings supplies the majority of Islay’s distilleries, produced to their exact specifications. Barley is turned into a "uniquely" peated malt, and is the foundation for the unique whiskies that are to be found here.
